Crawley Unaware of Captain Stokes' Provocative 'Weak Men' Remarks

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with comments made by skipper Stokes about the dressing room as no place for "those lacking fortitude".

Stokes made those words in several conversations in the wake of his team's defeat in the second Ashes series versus the Australians previously.

Ahead of the Adelaide Test, where the visitors now face defeat at the earliest opportunity, the captain stated he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" within the playing group.

"I've done the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," remarked Stokes.

But, after Crawley scored 85 on the fourth day in Adelaide, he stated: "I didn't see that."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Steady Philosophy

The captain issued his "fragile individuals" observation after England were beaten in the second Test to fall two matches behind.

The England squad subsequently went on a break to Noosa between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Prior to the Adelaide contest, Stokes said his team had held "raw" talks and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their battle to remain in contention in the Ashes battle.

Nevertheless, Crawley asserted the guidance from Stokes and coach McCullum had remained in line with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been extremely upbeat, the same as always," noted the opener. "It's just trying to be optimistic, play our way, with great liberty. We believed we could do something special going into this Test."

The Hosts Close of Rapid Series Victory

Crawley's dismissal on day four came during a crucial triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in 20 deliveries – including the wickets of Brook and Ben Stokes – meant England 207-6 chasing a notional target of 435 runs.

This means, Australia need just four more wickets on Sunday's final day to move to an unassailable three-nil lead with three matches played.

Defeat would prolong the English team's drought in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and ensure a fourth successive away Ashes loss.

This series is set to be decided in only eleven days of play – with England fell the first two Tests in two and four days respectively.

Not since 1921, when Australia completed victory in the UK in eight days, has the outcome of the Ashes urn been decided so quickly. The hosts have also triumphed in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"It's disappointing," admitted Crawley. "Our goal was to regain the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There remains significant pride at stake and we will definitely view it like that," Crawley added.

"It's been difficult. They're a formidable team. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners coming in to it they've proven why."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's performance in the third Test likely secures doubts about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under immense pressure for his position in the Melbourne Test on Boxing Day.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 runs in the team's second innings on day four, adding to his modest returns against Australia.

Across 16 Ashes innings, Pope has failed to score a fifty and averages just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a lower average.

But, the opener said any notion his teammate is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – referring to the journalists – "and not within the team."

"The squad is fully aware how good of a player he is," said Crawley. "He has had a good year to be frank."

"He has produced several excellent innings. This is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
